Marcus Vick and the NFL Draft

Tuesday, February 28th, 2006
How is Virginia Tech's Marcus Vick faring in preparation for the NFL Draft? Not as well as he could have, evidently: Vick had an above-average showing on the field this weekend but the same cannot be said for his interviews. With a multitude of off-the-field issues clouding his draft status, Vick has been put through [...]

Snappers are Wonderlicin’ good

Monday, February 27th, 2006
Pro Football Weekly has the NFL Wonderlic test scores for 2005 rookies posted on its Web site, and looking at the average scores by position, it seems the phrase “big, dumb lineman,” no longer is applicable. The results reveal that centers lead all positions with an average test score of 29, giving further evidence to the idea that the closer a player is to the pigskin, the greater his intelligence. Quarterbacks averaged 27 on the intelligence test, which is given each year at the NFL Scouting Combine. Tight ends also did well on last year’s Wonderlic, averaging a 27. Local guy Heath Miller, tight end for the Pittsburgh Steelers, had one of the highest scores with a 37. Texas A&M’s Geoff Hangartner, a center, was the highest tester with 47 out of a possible 50 points. At the other end of the spectrum were wide receivers, scoring the lowest with an average of 18. Pass catchers were followed closely by defensive tackles and cornerbacks with 19. The player posting the lowest Wonderlic score was running back Frank Gore of “The U” with a Vince Young-like six.

ESPN.com’s Page 2 listed Monday the average Wonderlic scores for various professions. The list goes like this… Chemist, 31; Programmer, 29; Newswriter, 26; Sales; 24; Bank teller, 22; Clerical Worker, 21; Security Guard, 17; Warehouse, 15.

The Vince Young test scores story, you may recall, is the second involving player intelligence and Wonderlic scores in the past six months. In September reports revealed the Green Bay Packers had the lowest Wonderlic scores among the NFL’s 32 teams. That was when it was suggested, and we forget by whom, that the Packers may be taking the short bus to games.

Blog Carnival Update

Monday, February 27th, 2006

UPDATE: Alton understands my point and posts his thoughts as well as this from a reader.

I can read a lot of the same stuff in the WaPo on any given day. Some of those folks are pretty bitter. That was my first and last trip to the carnival.

From my own comments Mandy, who has a great non political blog herself commented"

" I'm not really into politics. The past few times I've even looked at the blog carnival, and the first few have been politically motivated posts, I've closed my browser and not looked at any of the blogs."

Doug from Below the Beltway joins in . Doug seems to know a lot about carnivals because if you look at his sidebar you will see links to The Carnival Of Liberty. Doug has also sent emails and posted on the ODBA board about this. Good job Doug!

The Red Stater Chimes in. Great Post!

My original post about this is here .

So long, Jeeves

Monday, February 27th, 2006

I never used the “Ask Jeeves” search engine, but the few people who still do have probably noticed the search engine company dropped Jeeves.

It is now just “ask.com.”

The company said:

Ousting Jeeves represents a bit of a risk because his genteel figure has been so synonymous with Ask.com, thanks to past marketing efforts that included the butler’s appearance in Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade.

“If some people are upset about the butler going away, so be it,” said Steve Berkowitz, Ask.com’s chief executive. “As more people come to our site and are satisfied with the results they get, they are going to forget the butler.”

The funny part, though, is that I heard about this somewhere else and used Google to find the full article.

Ultimate in Political Correctness

Monday, February 27th, 2006
Virginia Tech has initiated a new program called SafeWatch. Its purpose is one that:

promotes individual and collective responsibility among students, faculty, staff, and guests, and encourages them to incorporate the Virginia Tech Principles of Community into their interpersonal and intergroup relationships. Patterned after the “neighborhood watch” program, SafeWatch will promote understanding of university policies and community expectations related to harassment, discrimination, or similar behaviors, and provide a way to report instances when policies and expectations are not followed.
Central to SafeWatch is a form to fill out if you have been wronged or even seen a wrong. Most amazing are the selections for "Gender". There happen to be 4, count them 4, choices. They are: male, female, transgendered, and questioning.

This has to be the ultimate in political correctness.

I wonder if there is any chance he will be dropping the pseudonym?

Drake is a brave woman

Monday, February 27th, 2006

I have to give Thelma Drake a lot of credit for her bravery. Appearing with Vice President Dick Cheney these days is risky business.

The good news for the Second District is that they will have another option in November. The voters can send a message to Drake that they are finished with the corrupt political system that Cheney leads and elect Phil Kellam.

Firefighters Go In, Knowing They May Not Come Out - Firehouse.com News

Monday, February 27th, 2006
Firefighters Go In, Knowing They May Not Come Out - Firehouse.com News:
Firefighters racing to the fire last week felt their stomachs drop at the report of three trapped.

Fighting fire is never a walk in the park. It's dirty and hot and dangerous at the best of times. Your life is on the line. You trust your fellow firefighters to have your back.

Firefighters will tell you they dispassionately weigh the risks and rewards before entering a structure to attempt a rescue. They understand the cold calculus of the job: When the alarm comes, you have to roll out; there's no guarantee you'll come back.

So as Piqua fire Capt. Vince Ashcraft and his crew pull up outside 527 Wood St. well before dawn, they are calculating their chances.

Smoke is pouring from a second-story window where the three were reported trapped. No flames on the first story. Entry is possible.

Police officers have attempted to enter but were turned back by intense heat and smoke. Clothed in heavy turnout coats and pants, shielded by helmets and assisted by breathing apparatus and years of training, the firefighters are the only ones with any chance.(Read More)
You have got to read this story. This reporter gets the story right. It is good to see the newspaper reporting the facts, and the firefighters portraying the story very well. I might add also that they had a save that day. Unfortunately two others died. But all three would have if it weren't for the firefighters.

State Of The Black Costume

Monday, February 27th, 2006

All I heard about on talk radio today was the State of the Black Union hype. All of which lead me to ask the unavoidable question: What's the latest on the hype surrounding the State of the Black Costume in the upcoming Spider-Man movie? My ramblings, complete with pictures, can be found at film geeks.

Young’s legs scramble, brain scrambled

Monday, February 27th, 2006
When Vince Young announced weeks ago that he would not throw for scouts at this weekend's NFL Combine, we sure didn't think the former University of Texas quarterback would be dominating the headlines as the event winds down. But just as his legs and arm helped the Longhorns win the NCAA national championship in January, it's now Young's noodle that has him potentially slipping from a top five pick in April's NFL Draft to possibly the bottom of the first round and maybe into the second round. Young's reported unbelievably low score – six out of a possible 50 points – on the Wonderlic test has the NFL scrambling to gloss over the situation. Reports now say the QB's score was 16 not six. We've even heard Young was allowed a do-over – and spotted 10 points. (Ok, we made up the second part of that sentence.) The Wonderlic test is employed by the NFL to measure cognitive ability, and the results are supposed to be confidential. However, that didn't stop someone with knowledge of Young's results from leaking the information to the media Saturday. Our newest favorite football news Web site, profootballtalk.com, says the leaker will soon be slipping on something pink.

Saddam Calls End to Hungry Strike

Saddam Hussein today ended his eleven day hungry strike, proclaiming "thu ith owee o uch tha mah cuno eed fo a mah cuno eed o mo". He then swallowed his Twinkie and tried again, uttering the slightly more coherent "there is only so much that a man cannot eat before a man cannot eat no more".

Physicians had been worried about the dictators health after he lost 113 pounds during his nearly two week stint of skipping lunch and picking at his dinner. "If it wasn't for the hearty breakfast, I believe he would have dwindled into nothingness," said Colonel Paul Sartre, Saddam's attending physician. "Man is not the sum of what he has already, but rather the sum of what he does not yet have, of what he could have. And what Saddam did not have, yet what he could have, is a nice rib-eye and a baked potato."

More about the trail

Monday, February 27th, 2006

How is living next to a train better than living next to a walking trail? That question keeps coming to mind as I read about the ongoing opposition to a rail-to-trail conversion project in Saltville.

IAFF Locals across the Nation

Monday, February 27th, 2006
What are other IAFF locals up to in the United States and Canada? What problems are they facing? What issues are most prevalent? Who are they raising money for? What successes have they had? What about other locals right here in Virginia?

For the answer to these questions, and other questions, you should check out the Complete IAFF Local Listing hosted by none other than Roanoke's Bravest Local 1132. That is right, Local 1132 currently has the most up to date list of IAFF Union websites on the internet. There are some other websites out there who do a very good job. But none are as complete as this one. This listing is a tool for IAFF Locals to use to become better informed. The locals in regions, states, and districts can network using the websites, and the information they contain to better themselves and others.

I recommend checking out the websites which are listed on the website, and really taking a closer look at what is going on across the Nation. I have viewed probably about 75% of the sites on the listing, which contains approximately 600 websites listed numerically as well as indexed by state.

More and more locals each day are realizing the effectiveness of the IAFF Local listing, and linking to it instead of just adding a few links here and there. Some have even taken the entire page and put it up on their site. If you would like to link to the page, feel free. That is what it is there for.

If you know of a link that needs to be added, let me know. If you notice a bad link, let me know. Otherwise, check the listing occasionally to see what is going on.

I also recommend checking the Virginia IAFF Locals occasionally to see what is keeping them busy. There are a lot of events coming up and some of them are listed on Local 1132's site, an some more can be found on the VPFF site.

Concern over House Transportation Plan

Monday, February 27th, 2006

I just received this via email. This lady, who is from Roanoke (I think), is trying to rally Southwest Virginians to protect their transportation funds.

Here is the full email:

Everyone–the House Republicans are pushing a transportation plan that focuses on NORTHERN VIRGINIA and HAMPTON ROADS.

*This plan also diverts funding AWAY from Southwest Virginia–when Southwest Virginia has many needed projects including repairs to Route 58, I-81, and other things we all have been waiting for.*

This is an important issue for ALL of Southwest Virginia—whether you are in Del. Carrico’s district, or not–and there is something you can do to help!

Governor Kaine is pushing a transportation plan–the Kaine Transportation Plan–which covers the WHOLE state, including funds for Southwest Virginia.

*Take TWO MINUTES—only two minutes–in the next week to either call, send a letter, or send an e-mail to Delegate Carrico–tell him to support the Governor’s plan because that’s the plan that will fund the people he represents!!*

EDC Plays Shell Game

Monday, February 27th, 2006
A while back I read and linked to an article by Barnie Day regarding the efforts (or lack of) put forth to bring industry and jobs to Henry County. In his usual well written way Barnie made some good points. Not the least of which was;I am almost certain that the shell building, or "big box" model of economic development that has characterized local government efforts all over Virginia for the

Virginia Blog Carnival- No link

Monday, February 27th, 2006

I used to contribute and look forward to reading the Virginia Blog Carnival.(No Link) When it started it was supposed to highlight Va bloggers talents and leave politics in the rear view mirror. This would would ensure a good response in traffic from the blogosphere. Traffic is the purpose of Carnivals. Readers from other states have little interest in reading about Virginia politics. When Chad started this, it was asked that politics stay out of the carnival. Waldo had this- From CC

"Virginia needs a carnival of its own. Though the well-known Virginia bloggers are all political, I'd like to see a round-up of blog entries on all kinds of topics, one that is decided non-partisan. It'd be a great way to get attention for lesser-known blogs, and for politically-minded people to discover the blog world outside of politics."

Chad said this:

"I would prefer our political bloggers send us something non-political, if possible. Let us see your softer side. That's just a suggestion."

Great comments Waldo and Chad! But that is exactly what the carnival has NOT become as 90% is politics. I fell into that trap and submitted a couple political posts, but I have stopped submitting anything now. There has been some cheap shots taken in the past, and it continues this week. J Sarge has noticed also .

This post has been updated here.
