Jim Webb’s Visit To Blacksburg

Wednesday, May 31st, 2006
It looks like the folks over at Raising Kaine beat me to the punch but I'll give it a shot anyway...

132 supporters showed up to cheer on Jim Webb and hear from Del. Jim Shuler, who endorsed James Webb and introduced him to the audience. Also announcing endorsements were Shuler's popular predecessor, former Del. Joan Munford and one of SWVA's most beloved Democrats, former Sen. Madison Marye.

The evening got off to a slow start as Jim became stuck in traffic on the way from a house party at Radford City Democratic Committee Chairperson Gail Montouri's home. Everyone seemed excited to be there, and the crowd was more than content to meet and greet with rather surprisingly, a few people passed out brochures from the Commonwealth Coalition. Two of the major points made by Jim during the Q&A session after his speech...

Christian values lead him to believe that marriage is between one man and one woman, but he is against the constitutional amendment on the grounds that it is poorly written and could cause trouble for homosexual couples who wish to take care of each other and or appreciate the same benefits as heterosexual couples. His finishing quote was "I support civil unions for gays".

Regarding the environment, Jim supports serious investment in alternative forms of energy. He mentioned ethanol as a viable option, citing its agricultural and economic benefits. He mentioned an energy policy similar to the multi-layered approach currently in place in Brazil. Suggested that we invest in a variety of alternatives rather than putting all of our eggs in one basket. (Sorry, I'm a passionate environmentalist)

Basically, one or two folks planted by Miller aside, everyone in the room seemed impressed by Jim. One of the winning moments of the evening was when Jim said "I arrived late and I'll stay late to meet with everyone".

As Del. Shuler said "Jim tells it like it is." That's precisely what Mr. Webb did. Most of the people I talked to afterward thought that Jim seemed like a man of honor and conviction and intended to vote for him on June 13th.

One last note, near the end of the meeting Henry Tieleman presented Jim with two checks, one from Democracy Prevails and the other from Mrs. Tieleman. In the end, Jim headed off to Rocky Mount. It was reported that Al Weed had somewhere between three and four hundred Democrats waiting to meet Jim. It's high time we took Virginia back, and Jim Webb will be the man to do it come November. Until next time...

Webb visits SWVA . . . again

Wednesday, May 31st, 2006

Today, U.S. Senate candidate Jim Webb made the rounds through the upper sections of Southwest Virginia. As far as I know, the other Democratic candidate, Harris Miller, has never been west of Roanoke. Webb’s first kick-off event, you will remember, was in Gate City.

WSLS.com had this report, which included a great quote by Webb. He was asked about his chances of beating George Allen in November and he said:

My momma didn’t raise me to be road kill. I didn’t become involved in this in order to just slow down George Allen. I don’t have anything against George Allen. I just think we need to have a different direction in the country.

Webb also stopped by Blacksburg on his trip today. Kathy had this report from the event:

132 enthusiastic voters packed the Blacksburg Public Library tonight to hear James Webb make his case for the US Senate. They liked what they heard and showed it with numerous rounds of applause.

Given the recent deluge of negative attacks and spin by Harris Miller, a few folks came with a bit of reserve. But most left impressed, enthusiastic, and with Webb signs to post in their yards.

The evening featured Del. James Shuler, who endorsed James Webb and introduced him to the audience. Also announcing endorsements were Shuler’s highly regarded predecessor, former Del. Joan Munford and Montgomery County, VA’s, most beloved Democrat, former Virginia State Senator Madison Marye, whose wife, Charlotte, also took home a Webb sign.

All of this talk about November, however, is assuming that YOU are going to get yourself and a few friends out on June 13, 2006, to vote for Jim Webb in the Democratic Primary. Based on the “vibe” about Webb in Southwest Virginia, though, I cannot imagine there will be any problems of getting people out to vote for Webb. In fact, people seem enthused for their opportunity to help elect Webb.

You guys have seen me lavishing praise on a favorite blog, The Burr In The Burgh before. I think Pastor Scott's blog is outstanding. It is, in fact, my favorite blog by a LCMS Lutheran Pastor in the entire greater Pittsburgh area. ;)

Well, today I left him a comment that he felt was worthy of actually mentioning in the form of a whole post.

The question at hand is, I suppose, addressed at my Christian brothers and sisters in the Protestant churches: What forms of Christian devotion do you think of as exclusively Catholic? Or, maybe as just too Romanish? If you're a Protestant, are you reluctant to cross yourself? Why? What about the Saints, crucifixes, etc? What about Mary? Are there elements of Christian devotion that you're denying yourself for fear of seeming... (gasp!) "CATHOLIC"?? This makes for some good conversation, and I think it's a lot of fun. I feel extremely honored to have played the role I've played in getting it started. Now go check it out and throw your two cents in.

132 Strong, They Turned Out to Hear James Webb

132 enthusiastic voters packed the Blacksburg Public Library tonight to hear James Webb make his case for the US Senate. They liked what they heard and showed it with numerous rounds of applause.

Given the recent deluge of negative attacks and spin by Harris Miller, a few folks came with a bit of reserve. But most left impressed, enthusiastic, and with Webb signs to post in their yards.

PS Rather than estimate the crowd, we actually counted. So, naysayers can play their discounting (underestimating) games, but we've got the numbers. I'd say the turnout was pretty darn impressive for a small town in SW Virginia. The northern part of the "Fighting 9th" sure looks like Webb country.

Advice for users of Blogger

Wednesday, May 31st, 2006
Time for me to reveal an online pet peeve of mine. This is a little piece of advice for those of you who use Blogger.com to host your blogs. In many ways, Blogger is a great tool; heck I used it when CC began. But it has lots of irritating features, too. Including this one: [...]

Regarding C’ville Too

Wednesday, May 31st, 2006
Norm has noticed. He also cautions us about holding the event in August. I'm not married to August, but it just seems right to me. It's outside the NASCAR schedule, and hotel rooms here for race week have to be inherited, they can't be bought. The political scene is in a virtual hiatus then, and bloggers will be searching under every rock and posting every cute video link they can find. He says

"Hey, Matt, this is Jim up in the booth. Listen, here's the problem... we're getting ready to come off the eight o'clock break in a couple of minutes and the boss is friggin pissed... Why? I'll tell you why - we're two thirds of the way through the goddam show and Katie hasn't shed tear one yet. Unacceptable... Yeah, maybe you're right, maybe she doesn't want to look vulnerable right as she's getting ready to take on a prime time gig... And maybe you can tell me why the fuck I should see that as my problem? You're the talent... Well, you say you're the talent, I'll believe you're the talent once I start seeing the waterworks... What? What? Unbelievable? I'm supposed to be the idea guy too?... Okay. Okay, here you go. Coming up next, we've got a highlight reel of some of the really fun moments from the show... You know, like the time she danced with Antonio Banderas. The time you two made a cake and she got icing on her cute little nose. All sorts of good shit... Yeah. So after the reel, you start talking about how much fun you guys have had. Start it off soft and then run... Yeah, then tell her how doing the evening news isn't fun like doing the Today Show. And tell her how much all of the good times have meant to you. Talk about the chemistry you two have, and how it's just inexplicable, the laughter you've shared, and how much you're going to miss her, and be sure to throw in the 'love' word, that always works, and tell her... Matt. Matt! Will you cut it with the sobbing? We're back on the air in fifteen seconds...

Busted!

Wednesday, May 31st, 2006

One day back in February I posted a major gripe session, wherein one of the things I complained about was that some jackass had stolen my Visa card and used it to the tune of FIFTEEN HUNDRED DOLLARS at the local Wal-Mart.

Yep. This moron just stole my card, walked into Wal-Mart, made a $1,500 purchase, signed MY NAME, and walked out.

I said in that post in February that I couldn't talk much about it because there was an ongoing investigation and the police had asked me not to run my mouth very much until something was resolved.

Since then, I'd only heard from the police department once. On that occasion, I received a letter from the cops telling me that they recognized that I'd been the victim of a crime and that they wanted me to know that they had emotional counselors standing by 24/7 in case I needed to have a good, long cry.

I don't need emotional counselors to vent to. I have a blog.

Anyway, today I got a call from the Chief who wanted me to know that after all this time THEY GOT THE BUM. He explained to me that police work is often very slow and very tedious and that it involves building an air-tight case, yadda yadda yadda.

So big props go out to our local police department. They kick butt.

But the main point I want to make is THEY GOT THE BUM. Between his crimes against me and another guy, he's been charged with eight felonies.

I'm going to get to go to court and everything. This is so cool. I won't get to do much, I don't guess... just testify that no, I didn't know the guy and, no, I didn't authorize him to use my card. I won't get to have my big Perry Mason moment wherein I arch one eyebrow and ask the perpetrator about the night in question.

Oh, well. I guess I shoulda been a lawyer if I'd wanted to have my big Perry Mason moment.

That's not the point, though. The point is, as I may have mentioned

THEY

GOT

THE

BUM.

I've Had It!

I've had at least four robo-calls (looks like I got more while away for over a week), one push poll, and in the last 24 hours two mailings full of misleading information against James Webb. Let's talk about the latest. "James Webb continues to praise Ronald Reagan's Republican values," claims the one-page (two-sided) brochure. The brochure tries to give the impression that James Webb supports the Bush agenda.

Ironically, James Webb has been out in front for several years condemning Bush policy. Where was Harris Miller? Oh, yes. He was wiping out our jobs and offshoring them, eliminating legitimate vote-count auditability, ramping down benefits for American workers and assuring workers of third world countries work in sweat shops. James Webb gets that trickle-down "economics" doesn't work. Harris Miller has much to learn.

I voted for Ronald Reagan when he ran for freaking governor (the first time). I was a new young voter. Sue me. I was an idiot to do it. I never voted for a Republican again, except to cross over in one GOP primary (1988). (I voted Dem in the general election.) We learn. Webb learns too (though a careful read of his writings shows he is more thoughtful and more accomplished than Miller could ever be on the issues). Instead Miller lobs emotional mortars.

We know our leaders by what they have advocated and whether they stood with courage on the right issues at the right time. James Webb did. Despite the show, Miller is a poor excuse for a Democrat. If Harris Miller wins the primary (and if he does it will only be because people believe his vicious deceptions), I will write in James Webb. Miller doesn't have a prayer, anyway.

Harris Miller will do nothing for Virginians and Americans and everything for corporations. So, what's the diff. We couldn't count on him when the chips were down during the past few years. We won't be able to count on him in the future. Harris Miller has presented the divisive, highly corporatized, campaign that every Democrat should reject. James Webb, however, we should be so lucky to have him for US Senator.

iPod neckwear

Wednesday, May 31st, 2006

In what has to be one of the strangest, but potentially quite practical, iPod accessories, you can buy a tie designed to hold an iPod nano on the backside. If you have never seen a nano close up, they are extremely small and very light, so this would actually work pretty well. And it looks like the tie would match your Nike/iPod sneakers. To trick out an entire ensemble, you might want to finish up with one of the jackets with a solar panel on the back so you can charge your iPod from the sun while you are walking in your Nikes.

Memorial Day and more…

Wednesday, May 31st, 2006
As Memorial Day came and passed, there were some good things and some not so good things that happened.

Well, beginning the weekend off, I graduated from John S. Battle High School on Saturday, officially becoming free from school-well, high school.  I start at Virginia Highlands Community College sometime in August, so wish me luck.  Yesterday, the actual observance of Memorial Day, there was a funeral for Robbie Light of Tennessee, killed from an Improvised Explosive Device, or IED.  Security was tight for fear of funeral protests.  James Webb did not come to Bristol like there was a rumor about.  I went to Dollywood to celebrate Memorial Day and graduation.  Those lines were sooo long!  I never want to stand in lines like that again!  Anyway, I got my tax refund check back today.   The money for that goes to pay for a car.

Has anyone seen the Bob Corker for Senate commercials?  Especially the one about immigration?  "Secure our borders, no amnesty,..."   Okay, Dubya, whatever you say...

Went to the Vatican

Wednesday, May 31st, 2006
We went through the museums of the Vatican today, including the Sistine Chapel, then walked to the edge of St. Peter's square. The Pope was there, or so we were told. All we could see was that a bunch of people were at the other end of the piazza doing something.

The Ball Is Rolling On C’ville Too

Wednesday, May 31st, 2006
Planning has begun for C'ville Too, the Virginia Blogger's Conference by bloggers for bloggers.

The conference will be at Patrick Henry Community College, via arrangments currently being handled by Barnie Day. Barnie has also graciuosly offered to help recruit speakers, and has presented me with an impressive list of choices.

I have been in touch via e-mail with J. Tucker Martin, Director of Communications for Attorney General Bob McDonnell. The Attorney General wants to participate, pending only a firm date.

My e-mail box is always open to anyone wishing to provide input on such items as;

  • Agenda
  • Date
  • Requested speakers
  • Workshops
Let's get together and make this happen sometime in late summer. I'm thinking about August, politics dies down somewhat then and you all will be searching for topics.

UPDATE:

Via e-mail I've just learned that the College has been secured by Mr. Day, pending only notification of a firm date. According to Barnie, Max Wingett, president of the college, said "Patrick Henry Community College would be glad to sponsor a thing like this...". Other details to come.

UPDATE II:

Smith River Community Bank agrees to be lead sponsor--commits to $1000. BKD
