No Respect for the Fighting 9th
Tuesday, May 30th, 2006
My few readers know that I always complain about SWVA not getting respect. A young democrat who runs the blog
Neal 2028
tells of a good example. His post is titled "
9th CD Convention...Webb and Miller No-Shows...
" I read Neal's blog often. While I do not agree with his views I do respect his efforts in supporting his candidate. I have read about his adventures getting signatures and canvassing, working hard for his party. His reward, and for that matter the 9th districts reward? The title of his post says it all. No Shows. Webb kicked of his campaign in Gate City. I shook his hand and thanked him for that. He was gone back to NOVA in under 3 hours. He has not been seen since. Miller is allergic to SWVA and as far as I know has not visited. If I was a democrat in SWVA I would take issue with that. The left pushes the absurd thing asking where is George Allen. I can tell you he was campaigning in
Abingdon
and he did attend the
9th District Republican Convention
. That is more than either democrat can say. Before this race is over Webb or Miller may wish they had supported us and visited with us. Most of us know that we in the 9th are on the bottom of the list. Webb and Miller have shown that to be true. I would think attending this convention would have been the least thing they could do. But then again: what has either candidate done for this area to begin with? Damn straight I'm voting for Allen.

9th CD Convention…Webb and Miller No-Shows…
Tuesday, May 30th, 2006I called the Miller folks first (since I came to their number first in my cell phone directory), at about 8:50 or 9:00. The guy who answered didn't know if Miller would be coming and told me to call back, which I did at around 7:30. I called Webb's folks at around 9:10, and they, too, said to try back later. I did that at like 7:40.
First, the Miller campaign; First, understand that I've had a long day. And both campaigns have 703 area codes, and the numbers looked basically the same to me. When I called the first number back, my phone cut out, and I heard " --- --- for Senate." So I just played it safe; I refered to "the candidate" coming to our convention. Apparently, "the candidate" was is going to be in the Tidewater area that day, but will try to send a surrogate. I said, "Well, I know Phillip Puckett and Chap Petersen endorsed Webb, and Leslie Byrne did really well in the coalfields," to which he responded, "Actually, this is the Miller campaign." Crap. I apologized, said I had been trying to call both campaigns, and "Northern Virginia folks all sound similar." He said it was fine, and to e-mail him the information and he would let me know about what kind of surrogate they would try to send (I suggested Jack Kennedy, and, even though he's made no endorsement, Dan Bowling).
I then called the Webb campaign. The guy I talked to said it looked like Webb wouldn't be able to make it. So I suggested they send a surrogate, either Puckett, Petersen, or Byrne (since she's awesome). He said to send the information, and he'd let me know what he found out.
So, there we have it. So, let me pose the question to you all; Since neither candidate will be there, which will make a better showing with a surrogate speaker?
(I'll give my opinions later--I've got to go to Wal Mart)

Celebration Time in Pearisburg
Tuesday, May 30th, 2006
One of the interesting things to see was this Civil War ambulance. According to the re-inactors, all ambulances looked the same...they were square.
There is a Civil War memorial on the lawn. It was erected July 3, 1909.
The courthouse was built in 1836. When the top was taken off to be refurbished, they found bullets from the Civil War.
Dedicated to Civil War heroes.
Graduation
Tuesday, May 30th, 2006The Pulaski County High School Young Democrat's will be hosting an end-of-year banquet at Randolph Park in Dublin on Monday, June 5th,to celebrate our accomplishments this year and elect a new slate of officers for the 06-07 school year. The guest speaker will be Brandon Bull, Rick Boucher's campaign manager. The event is potluck, with the YD's bringing most of the food. This will be a great opportunity to mingle with local officials and classmates, set an agenda for the year to come, and celebrate the start of summer.
I'll try to update a little more frequently after activities die down. Also, I hope everyone had a safe and happy weekend.

Tuesday, May 30th, 2006Fisher on Harris Miller
Tuesday, May 30th, 2006Marc Fisher on Harris Miller:
Miller is a Republican strategist’s dream opponent. He’s as charismatic as a toaster, wonkier than Al Gore and as proudly liberal as Al Franken. And at just about the worst time ever to be one, he’s a lobbyist.
So Republicans would love to run against Miller instead of Webb? I just hope Virginia Democrats do not make Republicans’ dreams come true by nominating Miller.
But what really jumps out in Fisher’s profile, in Miller’s own words, is this quote:
“I understand the fears that people have,” he says, yet unlike former Virginia governor Mark Warner, who overcame his Richie Rich image by embracing NASCAR Nation, Miller makes no such nod toward the other side of the cultural divide.
“It has to be more than symbolic gestures,” he says. “People down there are scared to death about their futures.” So Miller makes no effort to hide the fact that he chose to live in Virginia in part to be close to Wolf Trap or that when he listens to music on the campaign trail, he chooses opera (he’s on the board of the Virginia Opera).
“People down there” and he is on the board of the Virginia Opera? I think we can cancel the primary in the Ninth District and give Webb credit for every Democrat down here.
Miller would get slaughtered by George Allen.
It would be as simple as this: Cowboy boots (Allen) vs. Opera Enthusiast (Miller); or, Budweiser vs. Chardonnay.

"Let's Make Sure That George Allen's Worst Nightmare Comes True"With that statement, Donald McEachin endorsed James Webb today. Donald McEachin was first elected to the Virginia House of Delegates in 1996. He is a lifetime member of the NAACP, the Virginia State Bar and the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association. He represents Charles City, Henrico, and Prince George Counties and the cities of Hopewell and Richmond. In 2001, he won the Democratic Nomination for Attorney General of Virginia.
-- Donald McEachin
Don McEachin joins numerous state and national Democratic leaders who want James Webb as our candidate this November. Only then can we defeat George Allen. James Webb really is, as Time magazine put it, George Allen's worst nighmare.

Tuesday, May 30th, 2006My wife and I visited the Greenbrier Nursery in Cave Spring off of Starkey Road the other day looking for some herbs and vegetables for the garden. They have tremendous greenhouses and would you believe, two of their inground ponds have little tadpoles. I’m curious as to what kind of frog or toad they will become. My guess is they’re little spring peepers but I could be wrong!

Hey, you with the hair on your head, it's time for Stock Smarts. For the next three minutes, we're going to be discussing two things - you and your money. That's right, if you want financial advice, ain't no better place on earth to get it than FOX news, here and now, with me, your host, Jonathan Hoenig. Two words. Bill Clinton. Where the fuck does this guy park his bus? I'm not kidding around here. You know, maybe this guy just hates the stock market and everything it stands for. Maybe he just hates America. Or am I being redundant? I don't give a shit. I'll tell you one thing that I don't think you'll be able to muster any arguments with - he sure as hell doesn't have any stock smarts. Jonathan, you ask me, wasn't the NASDAQ over 5000 when Clinton was president? Don't you accuse me of being counter-intuitive, you purple-assed baboon, I'll put your arm in a sling. You must have been reading revisionist history put out by the red diaper doper babies. No wonder you need this show, your head is full of cotton. Hey, under Clinton, the DOW was in the low eights and NASDAQ never broke a thou. Those were bad times, folks, I don't care what little miss Pollywollydoodle Allday passes off as the new improved gospel while America steams it's shrimp. 911 changed everything, and if you don't cater to that, why don't you switch over to the Food Network right now instead of soaking up these expensive ariwaves of mine. I hate global warming. You know why? Because it's not real, people. It's a made-up barrel of horse hockey designed to discourage people from developing their stock smarts. It actually makes me laugh, because most of the morons who believe in this crapola have no money. Ha! That's poetic justice at it's finest. Earth to President Clinton - theres no scientific proof that global warming even exists. It's all bullshit, man, you know that and you just lying to the people. That was a little bit ghetto sounding for my taste, but sometimes you just got to tell it like it is, baby. Cause here on Stock Smarts we love to tell it like it is, not like we want it to be, or hope it could be, or maybe how it was in our fucking dreams. To be honest with you people, global warming is a bogus consensus dreamed up by Greens because they hate industry. They hate advancement. They hate technology Greens will lead us back to the stone ages. Of course the stone age wasn't as bad as a lot of people think. You could still pick up a share of IBM and get change back from a twenty. Yeah, buddy. And there were a lot of so-called educated folks who believed in something they called global cooling. Wake up and smell the bromide, citizen. It's all good. This is Jonathan Hoenig, inviting you to join me every night at 6:22 for Stock Smarts. If you feel like it. |
More Gore Hypocrisy
Tuesday, May 30th, 2006A flowery pro-Al Gore article with big graphic hawking his movie on the environment. How wonderful Al is and how great things would be if only we bought his book and now paid to see his movie.
-
My issue with Al Gore is not global warming. The issue with Al Gore is his hypocrisy!
-
Al and Bill and Hillary were in office for eight years. What did they do?
-
Ah yes. Bill brought back the Kyoto treaty, which was rejected by the Senate 99 to 0. Ninety-nine to zero! And what did Al, Bill and Hillary do about that? Al was the President of the Senate for eight years!
They collectively couldn’t get even one Democrat Senator to support them?
-
And now it’s all about Bush!
-
Al Gore – a perpetual hypocritical looser and whiner! Why is he in the news?

In a budget jam
Tuesday, May 30th, 2006Bristol Virginia city leaders are in a difficult spot. The city budget is $1.9 million out of whack. Three broad options exist: Raise taxes, cut services or do a combination of the two. No matter what they choose, someone’s going to be unhappy.
Not to kick city leaders while they are down, but ... profligate spending in past years (remember the Red Lobster deal?) and an addiction to bonded indebtedness as a method of covering routine expenses (like replacing police cars) are partially to blame for this pickle. Throw in skyrocketing health insurance costs, increased contributions to the state retirement system and fuel costs for good measure.
