Me and my trout

Thursday, June 29th, 2006

It has always been my private conviction that any man who pits his intelligence against a fish and loses has it coming.  ~John Steinbeck

My_fish

Windy.

They don't let me hold the fish, last time I did for a photo I held it like a tight loaf of bread and the eyes were bugged out.

I know it isn't that big but hey, that's life...I was running out of photo ops.

I hooked two huge (over 20 inch) trout today only to have them get off....it may be too depressing a sport for me.  I am glad to be getting good enough to "hook" the big boys but it just hurts too much to lose them after all that hard work.

Great day on the water...quick day...We are going to Downtown Live as soon as Toonces gets his cat nap in.

He is much better yes, thank you for all the nice emails and comments.  He had a tough time and still isn't 100%...I out fished him today so I know he isn't completely himself.

You wouldn't believe how tired and achy your arm gets.

We went to bed and asleep last night after watching videos of Lilly and the Thugs and Darius , and Calista....you get the drift.  I have missed the Thugs so much.    Too many reminders on the river.  Everybody has a dog here.

Enjoy the weekend guys!  We arrive in Greensboro around 11:00pm Saturday night...late.

And a Mojito...wonderful.  Want a new refreshing summer drink for super hot weather?  It is basically your mint julep made with rum.  Very light with a fresh mint aftertaste.

Another “Superman” review

Ken has his “Superman” review here, and it’s spot-on. Maybe I didn’t go as far as he in criticizing the film, but I agree with every single word he wrote.

The Daily Show Effect

stewart_close.jpg
I love "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart," as do many college students and other people in their 20s and 30s. Though I don't have the stamina to stay up until 11 p.m. to watch it every night, I try to see it during its next-day 8 p.m. rerun.

But last week, a pair of academics from East Carolina University came out with a study that shows that "Daily Show" watchers are more likely to be cynical toward politics, politicians and the news media. The study refers to Stewart's appearance on CNN's now-defunct show "Crossfire" and his plea to the hosts of the show to "stop hurting America":

Jon Stewart is not alone in his criticism of high-octane programs such as Crossfire, The O’Reilly Factor, or Hannity and Combs. Previous research has confirmed that high-conflict programs do negatively influence public support for politicians and political parties, in spite of the fact that the public enjoys watching (Forgette&Morris, 2003; Mutz&Reeves, 2005). Our findings, however, suggest that Jon Stewart should not be so quick to cast stones.

What do you think? Are you more cynical because you watch the "Daily Show" or do you watch it because you were already distrustful of politicians, politics and the media? Do you think watching the "Daily Show" affects your tendency to vote?

No lines, No waiting- Martinsville Bloggers Conference

Thursday, June 29th, 2006
Badrose and ImNotEmeril have made it very easy for anyone interested in attending the Blogs United in Martinsville for Free Speech conference to keep updated on the agenda, and to register and it is just a small amount ($50.00) for a "priceless" two days spent with some of Virginia's best bloggers. CLICK HERE for the agenda. CLICK HERE here to register cause you know you really want to see what kind of PJ's some of these guys will be wearing.

I have to admit that this agenda is looking pretty exciting even to a sometimes blogger like myself. It is so appropriate that they have scheduled a Pajama Party as I figure most all of you post in your PJ's at least part of the time. This gives everyone the opportunity to see you as you look when you write-hmmm, is that a good thing??? And for those of you who are nekked bloggers- well, please just trust me when I say that you will look better imagined then in real life.

As you can see in the sidebar Kilo is counting down the days. We both think that ImNotEmeril and his crew are doing a first class job setting this whole event up. It is very much appreciated here at Spark It Up!!!!

Kaine Mutiny, part two

Thursday, June 29th, 2006
Don’t have time to comment right now, but the WaPo has this article about Kaine’s over-reaching with respect to the budget negotiations. It’s a good read, and I’ll have my thoughts later.

The Kaine Mutiny

Thursday, June 29th, 2006
Outstanding column by Fred Barnes in the Wall Street Journal today: Tim Kaine, Virginia’s popular new Democratic governor, called for a tax increase. The Republican-controlled state Senate voted in favor of a tax hike and forced a three-month budget impasse in hopes of getting its way. Even much of the business community, especially politically influential developers [...]

President Rails Against Activist Supreme Court

Stamping his feet and gesticulating wildly, President Bush today angrily railed against the activist judges on the Supreme Court who ruled that Bush did not have the authority to order military war crimes trials for Guantanamo Bay detainees. The court held that the trials were illegal under both the US law and the Geneva conventions.

"Geneva? Who is this Geneva, and what do I care about her conventions" sputtered the red-faced chief executive. "This is the United States of America. These judges need to remember that their role is interpreting the law, not creating it. That's the president's job. If you doubt that for a second, just take a look at the First Addendum. Course, you can't."

The First Addendum, sometime referred to as the Jefferson Codex, is a part of the Constitution that is so secret that even the President and Attorney General are not allowed to see it except in times of 'a humdinger of a war'. It's contents are not known to the general public, but it has been claimed by previous presidents to grant wide ranging powers to the Chief Executive.

Lawyers for the administration say they intend to argue that since members of the Supreme Court have never seen the Jefferson Codex, they have no jurisdiction to rule on it. "We could show it to them, I suppose," said Attorney General Gonzales, "but then we'd have to kill them."

It's no good no more, the E. It's overplayed and overseen. It's saturated to the max, and can't take on more meaning. The essences it's held have mingled, grayed like dirty mop water.

E slipped so swiftly from major player to irritation to obfuscation. An actor with a hit or two, aging past the good parts.

No other letter of recent vintage has seen such rampant action. X has had a good run of years, and here's to seeing many more. A few have seen there day in the sun: O and V come to mind. W has been sullied, but just you wait, it'll bounce back. It's still to early to call on I, but there could come a day when much like E it will make it's move to a lower caste, from personal pronoun to vaguely descriptive adjective. Another eulogy at hand.

Was at time when all E stood for was an insider's name for Elvis, and then it spread to Presley's masses, fans so loyal that they only needed one letter to get their imaginations flaming.

Take that Edge. You've got it down to four, but you'll never get no further. Madonna won't be M, and Cher will never be a... hold that thought.

E television was a catchy brand, but it's name required a question. Whatchu watchin? E.

And then came E everything. eCommerce. eTravel. eBay. eBanking. eWanking. It was a shortcut, a way to inform the citizen that this is modern, dammit. Needless information, information that you scan right through without mental process.

I read the news today: 'Violence Flares in E Timor'. Was a time that wouldn't make me pause.

E. So overdone. So over.

Boating Safety on SML

Thursday, June 29th, 2006
Roanoke Times, 6/29/06, Pg Va 1 & 3: Promoting safety on the lake.

-

The graphic shows two high-speed boats running at considerable speed and clearly within 50 feet of each other.

Isn’t that a violation of current boating law?

Talk about the personification of arrogance!

-

Perhaps a better picture of these type boats at SML might be (click):

We need boaters who are responsible, reasonable and prudent at SML to share this wonderful resource with all creatures large and small.
