Back in the Saddle

Monday, July 31st, 2006
This cycle was a little different for me than the usual. Day one I rode the engine most of the day then switched to the ARFF crew due to the Haz Mat call on I-81. Middle day I rode the Engine the whole day, first twelve as officer and second half as driver. Third day, today, I split the day on the ambulance riding the first twelve and riding on ARFF the second half. But that is just the

Rollie- A fraud among organics

Monday, July 31st, 2006

If a dog jumps in your lap, it is because he is fond of you; but if a cat does the same thing, it is because your lap is warmer.

The pets are feeling a bit left out....with home tours, music fests, children playing, river sports...they haven't been the center of attention for a while so today they are once again the "featured" photo guests.

_mg_5721_filtered

My animals, though they can't really know their picture is being made, seem to enjoy the camera.  Or they are used to it being around.  They seem to sense it is some sort of special attention or honor to have it pointed at them so they oblige and often pose.

My non-organic tomatoes:

I was disappointed and shocked to find that my tomatoes, according to my husband, Toonces, the know-it-all, are not organic.  Priding myself in being all natural....never using pesticides on flowers or veggies....the special care I'd taken, all in vain because of a few doses of Miracle Grow.  Who would have thought?

me:  "I only used it twice."

T:  "It is a chemical fertilizer."

me: "But, but I only used it twice in a small dose.  It's just little crystals you put in water from a box!:

T:  "Baby, it is a chemical fertilizer."

me:  "So I'm not organic?"

T:  "And you're the one concerned with the USDA reducing the guidelines for Walmart....mmmm mmmm mmmm."

me: "Well crap."

Hey, they are still great.  Big and Tasty...I had a summer tomato sandwich just this afternoon.  One of the best things in the world.  Oh, but Toonces doesn't like those (loves tomatoes, but not a sandwich of them)...he's just weird.  But that is another post for another day.

WETS 89.5 FM

Monday, July 31st, 2006
Maybe it's just that I get to listen to this NPR station once a month or so when I venture into Southwestern Virginia but I believe it to be the best Public Radio station that I've come across. Living in the Roanoke market, we get our fair share of good programming of Appalachian content but it often strays into other areas of Virginia (cough...Nova, Eastern) that I couldn't care less about (that is to say until politicians want Appalachian money for pet projects (another bitter subject for me)). Through WVTF in Roanoke, we get to listen to Mountain Stage and A Taste of the Blue Ridge on Sundays but that is more or less it for programs that one needn't stay awake until 3am to find quality mountain issues.

This is why I love WETS. Every time I travel through the Johnson City market area I tune into this station to find wonderful programming. For instance, this past Sunday I was able to listen to a program, "Inside Appalachia", which must have been taking notes from this website. Virtually all of the show was dedicated to the opposition of mountaintop removal in search of coal. The show focused on the implications of a perceived cheap fuel, it's acquisition impact in the view of the locals, region, entire country and world. Basically, until someone in the upper level of guv'ment puts their foot down, the mountains will continued to be raped because we Appalachians are the minority in this fight. It will leave our grandchildren only telling stories of hills and hollers in Kentucky, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Virginia. (Also, look up this Sunday's edition of the Bristol Herald Courier. Part One of Two of the "benefits of Strip Mining" was published. Places like vineyards, airports and industrial parks can be built on filled-in valleys. Aren't we so lucky!).

You'll also find bluegrass galore, the Grateful Dead Hour, Roots and Branches and other great programming broadcast from the ETSU campus. If you're ever passing through the Tri-Cities area, be sure to keep your radio on 89.5. You're sure to find programming to your liking.

Southern steam bath

There's not much to say. It's hot in the valley and on the mountain. The temperature on our deck in shade at a little after 1 pm this afternoon was getting serious with the upper nineties. We went to a...

Across the pond

I have often wondered why the International Association of Fire Fighters isn't completely international. Actually to my knowledge the IAFF encompasses the United States and Canada, there being a visible difference in the two divisions. If the IAFF is for the U.S. and Canada then who looks after the best interests of the other paid firefighters around the World. Today that question was answered in part.

The IAFF has been in talks with other Fire Unions about a Global Alliance. I don't think there will be any mergers or take-overs, rather a United Nations for the Fire Service. The other Unions in the talks are the Fire Brigades Union (FBU), the New Zealand Professional Firefighters Association (NZPFA), and the United Firefighters Union of Australia (UFUA).

Are there other Unions of the sort out there? If you know, let me know.

Catching up

Monday, July 31st, 2006

My apologies to regular blog followers (both of you) for the prolonged silence. Of late, the election has demanded most of my attention. With just days to go, I thought I would shift topics to the sales tax holiday.

I’ve read the research - real benefit for working- and middle-class families vs. political gimmick. At this point, I’m prepared to side with the first school of thought. I have two kids headed to school this year (4th grade and kindergarten) and this will help. I’m not so sure it will help the businesses, since it just means I’ll buy all the stuff at once this year. I do buy the argument that it will help Tennessee businesses because I’ll shop closer to home instead of heading to Exit 7 to avoid the state’s outrageous sales tax rate.

What about you? Are you planning to take advantage of the sales tax holiday?

What’s going on at the Times-Dispatch?

Monday, July 31st, 2006
This is a bizarre story, and I leave it to Norm to sum things up succinctly: So, here’s to the TD, a paper in search of a goal, but not necessarily in search of news. Unless it relates to locals who appear on American Idol. They’re all over that one. Heh.

This could be trouble if the city manager ever sees my office

According to the Washington Times, a federal judge in the E.D. Va. has dismissed the lawsuit filed by an evictee against Arlington County for being evicted from his condo for hoarding too much stuff.

The article says in part:

"Dr. Sam Shipkovitz, who also has a law degree, was evicted by county authorities in Arlington after finding the crammed condo owned by his friend posed a fire hazard, reports The Washington Post. Shipkovitz claimed in his federal lawsuit the Arlington County hoarding task force had violated his civil rights.

Bad Luck

Monday, July 31st, 2006

Talk about bad luck.... Very sad .

A disabled man who lost his parents in a car wreck, his barn in a fire and his housemate in a nearby river lost his own life when his house burned to the ground Saturday night, friends said.

Majority want same sex marriage ban

Monday, July 31st, 2006

NLS has the the complete Mason Dixon poll on the marriage amendment. Ben broke the story and had the numbers up last night in another exclusive! VCA and Nova Town Hall also have thoughts. I don't think there is any doubt this amendment will pass. I have predicted voter turnout to be very high among those who support the amendment. They can argue the wording but most voters just care about banning same sex marriage. I think it will pass easily by a higher percentage than the poll shows.

This can only be seen as a positive for Sen Allen. Am I wrong?

Bearing Drift is asking

"Is offending the gay community something that Webb and Kellam will do or is that constituency necessary to their campaigns in terms of activism and support?"

FloydFest Redux

Monday, July 31st, 2006

073006floydfest3.jpg
072906floydfest2.jpgFloydFest is a mixture of young and old, old-time hippie and old-time traditional, gay and straight, liberal and conservative, odd and odder.

After five years, the event that few gave much chance of success continues to grow and fulfil the dreams of organizers Erika Hodges and Kris Johnson but the event becomes reality because of the overwhelming effort of a small paid staff and an army of volunteers.

The music is interesting and fun to photograph but ss a photographer, though, I try to look beyond the event and at the people because it is the unusual mix of humanity that comes together in that sprawling field in Patrick County that really defines FloydFest. Like the Friday Night Jamboree, the people make the event and you find a hodgepod enjoying the show.

Here are a few more shots gathered from the weekend. I'm still sorting through more than a thousand images and will put some more together in both slide shows and postings throughout the week.

Knowing Friend & Foe

Monday, July 31st, 2006
This editorial blurb in the Charleston (WV) Gazette should give one a good understanding as to which side of the Israeli-Hezbollah conflict the staff members are rooting for:

Editor & Publisher, a trade journal of American newspapers, says the U.S. press mostly has failed to report that the Israeli weapons currently shattering Lebanon were provided by America. But Arabs are well aware of this ugly fact — and hatred for America grows each time a civilian neighborhood is blasted by U.S.-made rockets, bombs and planes. [my emphasis] ( link )

No ambiguity there.

Got Some Catchin’ Up To Do

Monday, July 31st, 2006
My guess is you folks over in Danville aren't going to see much of senate candidate Jim Webb in coming weeks. No sense in wasting his time trying to improve on this:
Poll shows Southside backs Allen
By Mac McLean, Danville Register & Bee staff writer

DANVILLE, Va. - The Lynchburg/Southside Virginia area was one of three regions where a majority of voters supported U.S. Sen. George Allen, R-Va., in his race against Democrat Jim Webb, according to a Mason-Dixon poll released Sunday.

The poll showed 52 percent of voters in this area supported Allen, 24 percent supported Webb and 24 percent were undecided. (

24% favor Webb. How pathetic is that.

It's over before it's even begun ...

Marching Toward Oblivion

Monday, July 31st, 2006
Well, let's see.

We are fighting a war on terror around the world.

We have soldiers dying in Iraq.

Israel is fighting a two-front war that could lead to World War III.

The Iranians and the North Koreans are developing nuclear weapons.

We are racking up budget deficits like never before.

We are awash in illegal aliens.

The price of a barrel of oil is staying above $70.

Interest rates continue to climb.

Sales of houses are declining as the market softens.

Not to mention the looming chicken flu pandemic.

So what is the winning strategy for the Democrats in November? It seems they've settled on this:

Democrats see minimum wage, stem cells as hot issues

By Christina Bellantoni, The Washington Times

Democrats will spend August stumping on issues they say matter most to voters -- such as raising the minimum wage and funding stem-cell research -- as they scramble to try to regain control of the House or the Senate.

Some optimistic members of the minority party say a focus on middle-class matters could lead to Democrats' recapturing both chambers. (

Hot issues. Stem cells and the minimum wage.

Now you know why these geniuses have been out of power now for 20 years.
