It's not going to be a retreat. And we aren't going to call it a redeployment. It's going to be a pullback. Swell. No word yet on whether Okinawa is going to be our destination but you can bet, if we sustain any casualties wherever we are about to run to and hide in, Okinawa here we come:Iraq Panel to Recommend Pullback of Combat Troops
By David E. Sanger and David S. Cloud, The New York Times
Washington, Nov. 29 — The bipartisan Iraq Study Group reached a consensus on Wednesday on a final report that will call for a gradual pullback of the 15 American combat brigades now in Iraq but stop short of setting a firm timetable for their withdrawal, according to people familiar with the panel’s deliberations.
The report leaves unstated whether the 15 combat brigades that are the bulk of American fighting forces in Iraq would be brought home, or simply pulled back to bases in Iraq or in neighboring countries.
“I think everyone felt good about where we ended up,†one person involved in the
commission’s debates said after the group ended its meeting. “It is neither ‘cut and run’ nor ‘stay the course.’ †(link)
It is neither victory nor an end to Islamist radicalism as well. We already know what it isn't. It isn't "Let's kill all the sunsabitchas who plan on slaughtering our children and grandchildren in the streets of American cities." Instead it's a humiliating and ominous retreat from the battlefield where a dangerous foe gains strength in our signal of weakness.Arm yourself. You'll get no help from this bunch when it comes to the protection of your loved ones. They're unleashing the beast pulling back.

The Democrats have finally come up with their own plan to win in Iraq. They want to appoint someone to do what hundreds of government employees who are currently stationed in Iraq are already doing:
Democratic Leaders Seek Special Iraq Envoy to Try to Stem the Violence
By Carl Hulse, The New York Times
Washington, Nov. 29 — Leading Senate Democrats called Wednesday for President Bush to appoint a special envoy to work with Iraqi leaders to bring increasing violence in Iraq under control.
“Violence in Iraq has reached critical levels, and the violence is not predominantly instigated by insurgents, but is taking place between Sunnis and Shia,†said Senator Harry Reid, who will become the majority leader, and four other top Senate Democrats in a letter sent to Mr. Bush. “It is our belief that coalition military action alone cannot end this violence.â€
The lawmakers said in the letter that the special American envoy could follow up on issues raised between Mr. Bush and Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki of Iraq during their planned meeting on Thursday in Jordan. (

Expect Jesse Jackson to be called in any day now. Or Snoop Dog.
These are the guys who are calling the shots these days, folks. May God have mercy on us.

George Will does not pull any punches with this piece. He addresses the recent:
"Webb certainly has conveyed what he is: a boor. Never mind the patent disrespect for the presidency. Webb's more gross offense was calculated rudeness toward another human being -- one who, disregarding many hard things Webb had said about him during the campaign, asked a civil and caring question, as one parent to another. When -- if ever -- Webb grows weary of admiring his new grandeur as a ``leader'' who carefully calibrates the ``symbolic things'' he does to convey messages, he might consider this: In a republic, people decline to be led by leaders who are insufferably full of themselves."
Will also takes on Webb the writer saying:
"In his novels and his political commentary, Webb has been a writer of genuine distinction, using language with care and precision. But just days after winning an election, he was turning out slapdash prose that would be rejected by a reasonably demanding high school teacher."
While the frequent commenter's on Virginia blogs display hero worship for Webb, most reasonable people are turned off by his recent behavior. This story is all over the MSM and the blogs because it concretes what has been said about Webb's ego, temper, and his character. I look in the future and see Webb storming out of the senate because others will not agree with him. When he introduces legislation and others take the stand to support or disagree in civil debate will Webb want to slug them also? This is embarrassing for Virginia. Webb would have served us better by just staying home.
Update- NLS says there is more to the story. Jerry From on High does not buy it. Jerry also throws Megalomania into the mix. The Mason Conservative has his thoughts on Will's article here. Alton tells Webb the campaign is over. The Red Stater has his take here.

The Cedar River, a major head water of the Hudson River near Uncle Joe's place, below.

Indian Lake, looking toward Panther Mountain
With the southeastern parts of the Adirondack Mountains being a historic recreation destination for the urbanites of NYC, us southern Appalachian folk generally do not consider this area to be part of what we call home. What I found out on my one visit to the rural interior of upstate New York is that we both share the love for the Appalachian Mountain Range. These pictures were taken near the community of
Indian Lake.

I got a phone call last night from Tonya, my daughter. It started with a statement very similar to this; "Hi daddy, I need to learn how to shoot a rifle".
Now I've heard a lot of people say they "want" to learn how to shoot a rifle, but this was the first time I had ever heard anyone, not to mention my sweet petite daughter, say I "need" to learn how to shoot a rifle. Tonya is fairly well

Diplomacy took a wacky new turn today when
President Bush showed up a Raghadan Palace wearing a suit identical to the
one worn by Jordan's King Abdullah.
"Son of a gun, that's one good looking
outfit," quipped the president upon seeing the Calvin Klein three-button,
flat-front, side-vent black suit. "Do you have a Men's Warehouse here in
Amman?"
Apparently receiving a poor translation of
the president's quip, Abdullah reddened and stammered that all of the
whorehouses in Jordan were for men. Karl Rove, who speaks fluid Arabic, was
able to rectify the potential faux pas, and the two rulers laughed and
laughed until they were blue in the face.
In actuality, Jordan opened their first Men's
Warehouse this past spring, and it is the largest outlet in the Middle East.
"In fact," Abdullah told the president, "they are currently holding their
Dhu al-Hijjah sale, featuring an additional ten percent off of their already
low everyday prices. It is unfortunate that you will be unable to fit such
an event into your schedule."
"Tell you what, King, that guy al-Maliki has
been nothing but a pain in the butt lately. What's say we let him cool his
heels today, and you and me do us some suit shopping?"
"A most excellent idea, Mister President. You
truly are the decider." |

I met today with Barry Simmons, director of scholarhips and financial aid at Virginia Tech.
Simmons is also vice president of a new state association to promote access to higher education. The Commonwealth College Access Network was established in July and will soon change its name to the Virginia College Access Network.
The group will be holding a conference in the Omni Richmond Hotel Dec. 4-6. It's open to the public and covers topics such as the application process, earning college credit in high school, the admissions process, Latinos in higher education and grant applications.
