The last post of 2006

Bluesky_2It's time to look backward while we're thinking about the future.  This has been a challenging year for many people on a number of levels.

While the future might not be cloud free, I can see plenty of blue sky.  I am hoping that 2007 will be a year to remember for many of us.

I am counting on this being the year that sets the stage for the rest of my life.  Tomorrow might have rain in the forecast, but it won't dampen my enthusiasm for the New Year.

Welcome to 2007, don't forget your family and friends.

Jerry Fuhrman Continues to Discredit Himself

Sunday, December 31st, 2006
Jerry Fuhrman continues to discredit himself, as once again he is caught making up information in an effort to appear that he actually knows what the hell he is talking about. In a post earlier this morning, Fuhrman presented one of his typical rants, this time about how a dozen or so individuals in New York were protesting Saddam's execution. Fuhrman ends his post with the following statement:

"And their party is now in power. I fear for my country."

Excuse me Jerry, but I see no mention in this article on the party affiliation of the protesters. If I missed that, please point it out, because it appears that you just assumed these people were Democrats without any backing proof.

Jerry, I know many a liberal who wish to have no association whatsoever with the Democratic party. I also know a few Catholics who strongly disagree with both the war in Iraq and capital punishment. And guess what, these Catholics also consider themselves Republicans.

The oxygen must be getting very, very thin up on Big Walker Mountain.

Happy New Year

The sun sets on 2006

Sunday, December 31st, 2006
123106sunset.jpg Actually, this is a sunset from a few days ago. The forecast for New Year's Eve is cloudy and rain so I know I won't have a sunset photo tonight so I planned ahead, knowing I would need such a shot for a year-end metaphor.

A year ends

Sunday, December 31st, 2006
The year that was 2006 ends at midnight ending our second full year in Floyd County. Officially, we became fulltime residents on December 1, 2004, when we closed on the purchase of our home here, ending five days of homelessness caused by closing on the sale of our condo in Arlington. But we stayed at the family farm in Willis through December while Sam Hancock installed new flooring and various and sundry other contractors made the changes we wanted before we could call it home. Sam finished up the floors on Christmas Eve and we left the windows open between Christmas and New Years to let the smell of polyurethane escape. We spent New Years Eve with my mother and moved to our new home on New Year's Day. Yet it seems like we have been here much, much longer. Maybe it's the warm welcome from so many new friends. Maybe it's because this was home in my youth. Maybe it's a lot of things. We will celebrate the end of the year with some of those new friends tonight and look forward to the New Year with the same energy and enthusiasm we felt two years ago when we embarked on a new adventure in this new place that we now call home. Happy New Year from Amy and I to our friends, new and old. May 2007 bring you the peace that we now find in our lives.

When That Door Just Won’t Open

Sunday, December 31st, 2006

Medicare. Medicaid. Social Security. Billions in wealth redistribution. And one-sixth of the population of Southwest Virginia still lives in poverty.

We've been working at this, folks, for seventy years - 70 years - and this is where we are. This is our reality.

Knowing that, what do we do now?

To those who bought into all this way back when, those who know we can make it perfect if just keep trying longer and spend a few billion more, we do more of the same. We do the same and lots lots more.

Let's resolve to fix health care

By Tommy Denton, The Roanoke Times

Gov. Tim Kaine didn't couch his recent budget amendments as new year's resolutions, but the provisions dedicated to improving health care in Virginia would serve as commendable resolutions that the General Assembly should enact under the current circumstances.

With 1 million Virginians -- nearly one of seven -- lacking health insurance and the rate of infant mortality -- two babies die each day -- among the worst in the nation, Kaine was right to urge dedication of greater public resources to serve those most in need of health assistance.

The problem is not merely with Medicare or its companion program for the poor, Medicaid. The problem is with the entire system, which not only has left some 45 million Americans without health insurance coverage but also compiled a record among the world's advanced industrial societies for having the most expensive system yet with regrettably poor health outcomes to show for the investment. ( link )
Take a moment and analyze that paragraph:

● We have 45 million uninsured in this country ...

● ... and even without the participation of those 45 million Americans, we have the most expensive system on the planet ...

● ... and that system has produced "regrettably poor health outcomes."

Am I the only one thinking that maybe we need to go in a completely different direction, rather than advocate this "stay the course" mantra? That maybe there's a causal relationship in Denton's charges? That maybe it is all the government interference in "the system" that has made it so unwieldy and ineffective?

Keep pushing on that door, Tommy, keep trying to "fix" health care, and there'll be no health care.
