Libraries still matter

Wednesday, March 15th, 2006

Why spend $12.2 million on a new library in Bristol? That, in a nutshell, is the question that my fellow blogger, Jody Lee, is waxing philosophic about this morning on her blog on our Web site, tricities.com. Lee opines that libraries are headed for obsolescence in this Internet age.

I disagree. Sure, a computer and Google make it easier to get a quick answer to a question or to fact-check an editorial. I do this all the time. So does my daughter as she works on her 3rd grade homework.

Something for everyone?

Bristol Tennessee has a brand new land use plan. It’s getting ready to make its public debut in a series of meetings, which will probably be attended only by city leaders and staff, news reporters and a handful of citizen activists. Sad.

The plan and subsequent zoning law changes that grow from it will affect all of us who live in Bristol. Which parts of the plan will improve Bristol the most?

Too much culture?

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2006

A frequent letter writer questions the ambitious plans for a variety of cultural attractions in downtown Bristol here. He wants to know if the community is spreading itself too thin financially.

Some of the projects are finished or nearly so (like the Paramount and the library); others are still in the planning stages (like the science museum and the country music museum). Then, there is the train station, which seems stalled.
