How will the election affect higher education?

As the smoke clears from the 2006 election, higher education publications are starting to discuss what the Democratic gains might mean for colleges and universities.

Everything from student loans and financial aid to college prep programs for poor and minority students to federal spending on university research could sway with the partisan winds.

Virginia Tech professor researches cars run on water

The Earth and Sky radio series, a non-profit organization that describes itself as "committed to describing humanity's work to understand itself and its relationship to the Earth," mentioned work being done by Virginia Tech chemist Karen Brewer today.

Brewer recently developed a chemical molecule that splits water. Her hope is that this would bring the idea of hydrogen powered cars and electric power plants closer to reality by separating the hydrogen and oxygen in a clean, efficient manner.

NPR had a nice story this week on the failure of the 17th Street canal that led to most of the flooding in New Orleans.

Two Virginia Tech professors -- Mike Duncan and Tom Brandon -- are involved in the study of why the canal failed and are quoted in the story.
