Up late tonight finishing a book: “Luckiest Man: The Life and Death of Lou Gehrig,” by Jonathan Eig. Wow, what a great read. I knew the story, but it was still heart-breaking to read the details (and there were plenty of details; Eig, a correspondent with the Wall Street Journal, had [...]

My wife and I, on a rare weekend away from the kids (and the last one we’ll get in a while), were able to see “A Prairie Home Companion” this weekend (in the absence of any movies that we really wanted to see). I was very pleasantly surprised. I didn’t enjoy it as [...]

My wife made me watch a chick flick last night: “Rumor Has It.” Rumor has it that this movie reeks. I didn’t even enjoy the fact that Jennifer Aniston was in it.
Is there a worse actor on earth than Mark Ruffalo? I mean, other than Scarlett Johansson?
Two stars out of five.

The missus and I went to see a movie yesterday, one of the few times we’ve been able to drop the kids with the grandparents and actually go to the theater. My wife is stuck at home with the kids all day long (and what a wonderful mother she is), so we went to [...]

Watched "Match Point" tonight, the latest film by Woody Allen. It's little wonder that Allen's screenplay was nominated for Best Original Screenplay at the Academy Awards.
Excellent film. Four and a half stars out of five.
Ten Second Music Review

Cindy Price says versatility is her "mantra," and she demonstrates a wide range of styles on the preview cuts of her Tiny Little Widow Music Productions CD. I give this a "buy" rating.
You can hear Cindy sing the toe-tapping Martinsville-Henry County jingle here. It's the most controversial thirty-one seconds of music ever recorded [...]

If you're wondering, I'm at a prosecutors' conference, and that's why I haven't been around as much. I'll be home in a couple of days and things should get back to normal.
Anyway, I had the chance to see a movie tonight, and I'm glad I did. I saw "Akeelah and the Bee," starring [...]

Saw a pretty good movie the other day, "The Sentinel," starring Michael Douglas, Kiefer Sutherland, Kim Basinger, and someone from Desperate Housewives. It's about the US Secret Service, and a plot to kill the President from within their ranks.
Good movie, very entertaining, even though I spotted the bad guy early on. It's worth [...]

Just watched a hilarious documentary: "Word Wars." It’s about the fight between huge, huge geeks for the National Scrabble Championship. It’s a riot.
Four stars out of five.

Style Weekly has a good review of two recent books on Virginia politics: Barnie Day's brainchild, "Notes from the Sausage Factory," and Steve Sisson's "Adventures in Warnerland."
I haven't finished "Warnerland" yet, so I'll save my thoughts for later (I will confess that it has been entertaining, thus far).
For some time, however, I've [...]

I recently read this book -- "His Excellency," by Joseph Ellis -- and I share many of the thoughts expressed by Lattimer in this review. It's a good read, especially if you are interested in the history of the American Revolution.
I had forgotten to mention the book until I saw that review over [...]
Capote

The wife and I watched "Capote" tonight. Excellent film, and there is now no question in my mind that Phillip Seymour Hoffman deserved the Oscar for Best Actor. Outstanding.
Four and a half stars out of five.

The significant other and I saw a good flick last night. Long before all this immigration stuff, there was the undocumentable household worker, Mary Poppins. Four and a half stars out of five.

Watched a very good film this weekend: Junebug. Quirky movie, very entertaining. Four stars out of five.

My wife and I watched an interesting film last night: "The Exorcism of Emily Rose." It was more of a courtroom drama than you would expect, given the title, and it was very entertaining. As always, Laura Linney and Tom Wilkinson were very good.
Three and a half stars out of five.

Mrs. Behan and I watched "Walk the Line" last night, the biopic about country music legend Johnny Cash. The movie was good. Not great, but good. I had much the same reaction as I had to "Ray," which is to say that I thought the acting performances were superb, while the movie [...]
